As artsits, we make our work because we want more people to see what we are doing. He says that, "artists are driven to dance naked in public. You are not normal. If you were normal you would just dance naked in private." Every time we show our work, whether it be in a gallery setting, online, or even to one of our friends, we are putting ourselves on the line and allowing others to see our heart and soul or "dancing naked in public." As an artist, putting your work on display isn't always easy due to judgement of others. But Saltz reminds us, "only be an artist if you really really really really really really really have to be one." Artists are fueled by this desire in them to create and as many of you may know, we just HAVE to do it. Work will come naturally to us.
The second step to becoming successful is to figure out what you are obsessed with and follow it all costs. Let it consume you.
3. "Grow a fucking pair, don't be a goddamn baby."
Saltz says to do whatever you have to do for your work to work. If art is your true passion you will do whatever you need to so you can continue to make work.
His talk was animated and engaging and basically what I needed to hear at this moment in time. He said that it's okay to have no fucking idea what you're doing, you won't always have the answers at all times. As long as you show up and apply you will eventually get what you want.
